First off, have an awesome pic of the Rum Bum R8 at the 24 Hours at Daytona. I had noticed that my '08 A4 (2.0L, Quattro, 6MT, 108k) had started leaking a bit of oil. I didn't really think too much about it since the oil level hasn't been changing drastically (I make sure to keep an eye on it since it burns oil and it also has that awesome oil level sensor) also, there's the running joke that German cars leak oil. Mine is living up to that.

I saw a bit of smoke rolling out from under the hood on the way to grab lunch today and panicked briefly until I remembered the leak. I don't know why I assumed it was a pan gasket but when I popped the hood, it's definitely high on the engine. So now I'm assuming it's a valve cover gasket.

I need your opinion on a few things now that I have a pretty good idea of where it's leaking. 1) is a valve cover gasket leak indicative of anything else? 2) I'm probably going to do the spark plugs at the same time as this gasket. To the best of my knowledge, the plugs have never been changed, will this be a problem? (hopefully they're nice and lubed up from all of the oil that's now leaking all over them.) 3) What do I need to look out for?

Thanks for your input! If you want, I can mail you ghost pepper barbecue sauce.

should be easy enough to find the source. Probably is a plugged PCV system that is causing the leak. Pretty common on those, and not hard to replace. Do the plugs, though I highly doubt any got into the tubes, like Saturn twin cams used to do, but they will come out ok.

Let's get to it! Feel free to ask more if you need

When my B7 burned oil, The engine actually had to be pulled (Carfax=Screwed) and it was fixed within a week. This, doesn't sound like the same problem that I had with my B7.

1. Valve cover gaskets aren't always indicative of another problem, it could be cracked or simply worn out from cold weather and that kind of thing either way if you're good at DIY it should be a cheap and easy fix.

2. If you're sure it's the valve cover gasket, you should make sure that it's actually the problem, and I think you actually will have to remove the spark plugs to do that. It shouldn't be that much of a problem as long as you know what you're doing.

3. Just make sure the engine is nice and cool, an oil leak sealant may come in handy also and be sure to not drop anything into the engine bay, Haha.

Here's a pretty good deal on a new one!

Thanks for the note. I won't have enough time to work on it for a while but I plan on doing it myself. I can snap some pictures later today but I don't think there are a lot of places the oil could be coming from.
